If you are afflicted with HIV then you probably know how difficult it can be to get insurance. Individual insurance that is. It is much easier to get insurance for HIV positive people if they go through their employer.
Most larger companies offer health insurance to their employees. You even sometimes have the option of getting a life insurance policy or retirement annuity through them. This offer is most often only open to full time employees though, so check with your employer if you are eligible for insurance coverage.
Any insurance application asks questions about your health. These days, one of those questions is often about your HIV status. The problem is, not everyone wants their employer or work colleagues to know about their HIV status. If this is the case, getting insurance for HIV positive people can get a little awkward. Here is something you can try though.
Tell your employer that you would like your doctor to fill out the medical section of your insurance application. Also be sure to mention that the doctor would like to fax the application straight to the insurance company. This will help to ensure your privacy as you can order the insurance company not to reveal your status to your employer should you wish.
The great thing is that your employer has to offer you the same rights as every other employee. This means that getting insurance for HIV positive people just got a lot easier.
Of course, there are insurance companies that will offer you insurance even if you are HIV positive, but they will place restrictions on the cover and probably charge you quite a lot in premiums. If you are forced to get individual cover, it would be better to find an insurance company that specialises in offering insurance for HIV positive people rather than a regular insurance company. These companies will already have the infrastructure in place to make sure that you are doing your best to be a low risk investment and will be able to offer you much lower premiums than regular insurance companies because of this infrastructure.
