HIV Aids And How it Affects People

There is now a great awareness of how widely spread the problem of HIV aids is. There is no country that is completely free of the disease and its effects. Over the last twenty seven years more than twenty five million people have succumbed to the disease. HIV aids does not only take lives, it affects people adversely in many other ways too.

HIV aids costs money. When a person is infected and begins to show the signs of a weakened immune system their ability to work and provide for their family is inhibited. Meanwhile, the treatment they need to be able to live with the disease uses up vital financial resources which places further strain on the family.

It has also been found that children who are affected by the disease, either by having HIV aids themselves of because of parents afflicted with the disease, are more likely to miss school and miss out on an education since they have to then care for their siblings and drop out of school to find work.

HIV aids also places a lot of strain on local clinics, schools and businesses as the people who are infected need to have medical care which they often cannot afford to pay for and will not be able to go to work, but cannot be fired as a result of non attendance. Since the parents are unable to afford to pay for medical care, they will also default on their school fees and the schools have to assume the burden of the children who may drop out to look after their younger siblings.

The HIV aids virus does not care who you are, it will take any victim any way that it can. It is true that some groups are more at risk than others though. Any person that is promiscuous places themselves and their future partners at risk as they may have infected a number of people before they even realise that they are infected. Doctors, nurses and paramedics are also at risk as they are exposed to the blood of a great many people on a daily basis and it is in the blood that the highest risk of infection is carried. Another high risk group would be the drug addicts who make use of the method of injection as they often will share needles or use dirty needles to inject their drugs which will transfer sufficient blood from one person to another to cause an HIV aids infection.

The best cure for HIV aids is prevention. If you do not take part in risk taking activities and take good care of yourself even when helping another human being you increase your chances of becoming infected with the virus. So, no matter what the problem, even if you know the person, make sure that you protect yourself with rubber gloves before helping a person that is bleeding, just in case. If you think that you may have come into contact with the virus get onto a course of anti retro-virals immediately.
