HIV Positive Individuals Can Still Obtain Life Insurance

Insurance is an important part of every individual's life. Insurance is obtainable in many shapes and sizes, ranging from car and home insurance to business insurance, medical insurance and life insurance. Ironically most individuals have insurance for their earthly possessions such as their car and home contents in place, but when it comes to providing for their own futures and the futures of their loved ones, many people are not adequately prepared. This type of insurance is available in the form of life insurance and even if you are HIV Positive you can still obtain a life insurance policy!

Life insurance is usually obtained for one of two reasons. Policy holders will either acquire such a policy to take care of themselves in the event of disability following an illness or accident, or to provide for their loved ones in the event that they (the policy holders) passes away following natural causes, an illness or an accident.

As mentioned in the first paragraph, there is a serious misconception about the ability to obtain a life insurance policy if HIV Positive. If you are HIV positive it should not be seen as a death sentence. If diagnosed early enough it is possible to get the correct treatment and still lead a long and healthy life. Some insurance companies now have policies for HIV Positive individuals specifically because of the above statement. Such individuals still deserve the opportunity to prepare for their future and for the future and wellbeing of their loved ones.

It is however important to realize that there is a difference between being HIV positive and having AIDS. The HIV virus can in some instances be present in an individual's system, but be dormant for years and years. However, once the virus starts attacking the individual's immune system to the extent that the immune system is basically rendered ineffective, a person is then an AIDS sufferer. Many insurance companies will not be able to offer AIDS sufferers policies.

Remember that insurance is all about risk. We (the consumers) basically transfer our liability to the insurance company, asking them to accept the risk on our behalf. If an individual is therefore HIV positive, insurance companies are at risk, but with the appropriate medication and treatment they know that the individuals still deserve a fair chance at live. If an individual has AIDS on the other hand, insurance companies also have to face the facts - once the immune system is damaged to such an extent that it's ineffective, AIDS sufferers are prone to infections, illnesses and cancers which will drastically shorten their lives. In other words, the associated risk that the insurance company will then need to accept is simply too much.

It is alarming to hear how few people are confident about their HIV status. Many people just assume that they are not HIV positive - a dangerous and foolish assumption! Rather have yourself tested as early as possible and make sure that if you are HIV positive, you get the appropriate treatment and get all your insurance policies and other matters in place!

Offering life cover to people who have contracted HIV is in fact no different from providing cover to people with diabetes or any other chronic illness that requires constant management.
