The Difficulties And Expectations For Those Dealing With HIV

A majority of people know about the HIV virus or do we? Since the finding of the HIV virus by Luc Montagnier back in the 80's the virus has been put under the spot light to promote social awareness. One of reason why HIV has been so tricky to control and eradicate is because there is a negative connotation attached to the disease. This is because of it having been formally linked to promiscuity, being gay and drug addiction. Most individuals who were aware that they were HIV positive kept their status a secret because of feelings of shame and fear of being rejected.

The opinions and prejudices of people in the western world began to change with regards to HIV, when public figures who had contracted the virus began to speak up and tell the truth to inspire other people. This opened the eyes of many people to help them realise that this virus was real and was not exclusive to junkies and homosexuals. As people such as basket ball player Magic Johnson admitted their HIV status, people started to awaken to the fact that the virus was more wide spread than they had thought.

Regrettably there are still many people in this world both in Western societies and others who are uneducated about HIV. There are also many false and superficial beliefs about HIV and AIDS, especially in Africa. There are some men who have the superstitious belief that having sex with a virgin will cure them of HIV and AIDS. Because of this belief many men are raping young girls so that they can be 'cured'. This act, based on false information, can only be eradicated with proper education on HIV.

Another reason why this virus has been able to spread in the way in which it has is because many people are afraid to get tested. Many fear the results so much that they prefer to not know than know. The problem with this is that they continue to infect other people who do not have the virus. This is the perfect scenario in which ignorance is not bliss.

Governments and non profit organisations have stressed the significance of education and knowing your HIV status. At schools, children are being taught about HIV and at clinics and hospitals people are being giving pamphlets about the disease and how to get tested and treated. The private sector has also gotten on board in bringing more awareness to the pandemic. Testing stations have been put up at various venues, so that it is easy for people to get tested. Another aspect of getting tested is the pre and post test counselling. The person needs to be prepared for the possibility that they could be HIV positive and have people close by who can give them the proper guidance and support should they test positive.

The is good news and hope for those living with HIV and AIDS in that the life expectancy of those living with HIV and AIDS is increasing as the years go by. If you think that you have contracted HIV you have everything to gain by getting tested as soon as possible.
