As I am sure you know there is a metabolic condition known as diabetes mellitus or simply diabetes. What you may not know is that there are actually a few different kinds of diabetes. All of the different kinds of this condition have something to do with insulin and the resulting high blood sugar.
The first kind of diabetes is referred to as type 1 diabetes. You have type 1 diabetes if you are not able to produce enough insulin. The treatment for this kind of diabetes is insulin injections on a regular basis to keep the insulin levels in the blood high enough to deal with the blood sugar levels. This kind of diabetes can also be known as insulin dependent diabetes. This condition is a lifelong condition.
Then there is type 2 diabetes. This results when the cells in the body are not able to utilize the insulin that is being produced in the right quantities correctly and so the blood sugar levels rise as a result of this.
Pregnant women can also develop diabetes. This is generally known as gestational diabetes and is seen as a high blood sugar level during pregnancy. This may go away completely once the baby is born or it may be a precursor to type 2 diabetes.
There is also congenital diabetes in which the insulin produced is defective, diabetes that results because of cystic fibrosis of the glands that secrete the insulin, steroid induced diabetes which results from excessive use of glucocorticoids and a range of monogenic diabetes. All of these forms of the condition result in insulin either not being produced or being deformed or not being used properly by the cells in the body.
Fortunately all kinds of diabetes are treatable with insulin injections of some kind. Some of these forms of the condition can also be controlled with the use of certain medications. Generally though diabetes can only be controlled, not cured as it is a permanent situation that has affected the glands in the body or else the cells of the body.
Those people who have diabetes, over a hundred and fifty million people worldwide, need to be careful. If they do not keep track of their blood sugar levels they may go into shock and may even end up in a coma. Once this happens you are in real trouble as this condition can kill you.
Some people are genetically predisposed to developing diabetes, other people cause the condition to develop through living unhealthy lifestyles. If you have diabetes in the family it is a good idea to make sure that you keep your weight in check and do not do things like smoke and eat a lot of sweets or unhealthy foods. You can drastically improve your chances of staying free form the condition if you take care of yourself. If you are unable to avoid it or if you already have the condition then you need to make sure that you take your medication on time all the time.
